Publisher No More Robots has announced Hypnospace Outlaw, a game which lets its players experience '90s internet in an alternate reality. The news comes via a press release, which gives some details on the seriously wacky experience.
In Hypnospace Outlaw, players trawl and police an alternate reality internet, keeping the online experience free from bullying, copyright theft, and vandalism. It's set in the year 1999 and asks you to scour the Hypnospace, checking out a wide variety of weird and wonderful websites, keeping an eye on your work email, and downloading a plethora of apps that may or may not be useful. The team has made comparisons to Yahoo!'s web hosting service GeoCities, but in video game form.
As part of your job as a Hypnospace Enforcer, you'll be tasked with keeping the internet clear of wrongdoers, with reports and rewards coming directly from the Hypnospace Patrol Department to your inbox. You can customize your HypnOS desktop however you see fit, with a variety of downloads, wallpapers, screensavers and helper bots to keep you company. There's a trailer for the game which you can check out below, and you absolutely should, given that it is a slice of pure '90s nostalgia.
Launching today is its very own Discord server. In it, players can share the web pages that they create directly within the server. Hypnospace Outlaw will launch later this year on PC, Mac, and Linux, with potential console plans to be announced soon.
The game comes from Tendershoot, the studio that made the point and click adventure game Dropsy. Dropsy follows the titular clown as he becomes an outcast after a fire at his family's circus and must work to discover the truth behind it in order to clear his name. It seems the team is hellbent on offering up only the most unique of gameplay experiences, with Hypnospace Outlaw shaping up to be their strangest yet.
