Stylish indie action title Hyper Light Drifter will be available July 26, 2016 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The entire campaign will have the option of couch co-op, which is perfectly suited to the living room. No price point is known, but the game was released earlier in the year for $19.99 on Steam.

The neon samurai title developed by indie developer Heart Machine launched to strong reviews from critics and players alike who heralded the melancholy music and tone, the brutal pace of the combat and the stunning visual flare that ties it all together.  The story is a visual and contextual narrative unfolding without a single word in the entire game.

Where the game has received some criticism is where others have praised it. Like similarly hard-nosed games that ask a lot of their players, Hyper Light Drifter’s difficulty and lack of guided narrative have served as a double-edged sword for the game — enthralling some and turning off others. Despite its high difficulty, It’s still ranked among the top PC games of the year by many.

On the developer’s website, the game is described as,

…a 2D Action RPG in the vein of the best 8-bit and 16-bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.

While the port from PC to consoles was in the works since before the game was launched, the release date for the console port wasn’t officially announced until July 22, 2016. Hyper Light Drifter started as a Kickstarter that raised over $645,000 in donations. The Kickstarter opened Sept. 12, 2013, and raised $250,000 in its first eight days. The project was fully funded within a month.

While co-op wasn’t available when the game launched on March 31, 2016, a cooperative beta opened April 27, and PC players have had the option since.

Is couch co-op is selling point to console markets? If it has to be online or couch co-op, which would you have preferred? Let us know in the comments below!
