Hot off the announcement of Homeworld 3, Gearbox decided to bring the classic RTS series back up on stage again to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This time, it's not a new mainline entry, but instead the spinoff Homeworld Mobile (name to be finalized later) that got shown off, with a new trailer.

Developed separately from Homeworld 3 by Stratosphere, Homeworld Mobile takes place in a new galaxy where players can expect to find a new take on the classic series suited to the mobile platform. Those who back Homeworld 3 will also get guaranteed priority access to Homeworld Mobile and be able to play it sooner than everyone else. More information will be available on the official website, where you can sign up for more details.

What is Homeworld?

Homeworld is a classic RTS series that first released in 1999 by Relic Entertainment. It featured 3d graphics and large scale battles across 16 single player maps with an engaging story and a strong multiplayer component. A standalone expansion, Homeworld: Cataclysm (now known as Homeworld: Emergence due to copyright reasons) was released in 2000 by Barking Dog Studios which focused on smaller-scale battles 15 years after the first game. In 2003, Homeworld 2 was released, again developed by Relic Entertainment. Instead of the similar opposing forces of the first game, Homeworld 2 featured much more differentiated ships by faction and brought back the larger scale fleet battles as well. It continued the story of the previous games with 15 missions and had a strong multiplayer offering.

In 2013, Gearbox bought the IP rights at the THQ IP firesale and began working on a remaster of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 for modern PCs, which would be released in 2015, and included classic and updated versions of the titles. Homeworld: Cataclysm wasn't released as part of the Homeworld Remastered Collection, due to Gearbox lacking source code, but in 2017 it would be released on GOG as Homeworld: Emergence. In 2016 however, the series did progress with Blackbird Interactive's Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, a prequel to the series made by former Relic employees. While mostly well received, Deserts of Kharak decision to be a planet-bound prequel rather then the 3D space battles of previous Homeworld games was criticized as a large departure from what made the series unique.

That brings us to today, with the announcement of Homeworld 3 and Homeworld Mobile, showing that Gearbox views this as a key IP going forward.
