Dambuster Studios have revealed in a recent interview with Gamespot that the upcoming Homefront: The Revolution will have microtransactions for its co-op Resistance experience. In this mode, up to four players can go through a series of combat scenarios using customizable freedom fighters with progress and unlocks that are separated from the main campaign. Loot can be purchased with either earned currency or real money in the form of "Resistance crates", and the same items will be available to players no matter which way you're paying for them.

Resistance mode will have players going through twelve unique missions at launch, unlocking skills, weapon blueprints, and combat gear along the way. Each fighter will be limited to a single primary weapon during the missions, but this weapon can be extensively modified via a Crysis-like weapon mod screen, which allows players to change tactics on the fly and fill new roles as they become necessary.

To soften the blow of microtransactions a bit, designer Fasahat Salim was quick to reiterate the existence of Homefront's free DLC for the mode, which will more than double the number of missions available over the course of a year (adding 20 of them), as well as provide new weapons and cosmetic items to be unlocked via crate. It is unknown whether this year of free DLC will also affect the game's 30+ hour campaign mode as well.

"Everything that's available in the game is available for free, and even after release we're going to continue to be delivering missions, drip-feeding them into the community for at least a year. "There's always going to be new content delivered for free, players are going to have lots of stuff to dig their teeth into."

Homefront: The Revolution will be hitting PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on May 17th.

Quick Take

This is basically the same system that Halo 5: Guardians has used, and you can ask any fan of that game if they're pleased with the "Free DLC" maps so far, which has consisted of one new Warzone map, some official maps made in the game's user facing map editor, and plenty of reskins of existing content. There has been a focus there on more content for the microtransaction packs, which is logical and makes me wary of any similar venture. I hope that Dambuster Studios is better at implementing this system, but who knows if this "Resistance mode" will even attract enough players to last for an entire year.

What do you think of this setup? Would you prefer it to be paid DLC over Microtransactions? Are you interested in multiplayer Homefront at all? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
