In a recent interview with the Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima, Kojima talked a little bit more about his upcoming game and his partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. You might remember that last December, Kojima officially announced that he would be leaving Konami to form his own development studio in partnership with Sony. Little else was known about what Kojima Productions was actually working on since it was formed six months ago, until now.

Hideo Kojima talked more about his upcoming game with Famitsu magazine, translated later over on Siliconera. In that interview, Kojima talks about things like the studio’s new logo and a bit about Kojima’s personal life, but the real meat of the interview comes when Kojima was asked about the new IP Kojima Productions is working on. This was his response:

It’s an amazing game. Along with the plot, characters, and game system, I’m brainstorming everything equally. Some parts are very new, so I’ll need to experiment with it.

I won’t say that it’s an open-world title, but those that enjoy playing today’s AAA titles such as The Division and Uncharted will be able to play it smoothly. When it gets announced some may thing that it’s not as way-out as they had expected, but I’m sure they’ll understand once they play it. The genre is action.

Possibly the biggest thing to take away from this response is that Hideo Kojima confirmed that the game will be an action game. This puts to rest many of the rumors that Kojima might be working on another survival horror game since Silent Hills was cancelled last year. Kojima also talked about Virtual Reality in the interview and basically stated that their newest IP will not be a Virtual Reality game. His reasoning is simply that the development team just doesn't have the necessary personnel to tackle a challenge like VR. Although the interview did give us a little insight as to what Kojima Production's first game might be, the game is still very early in the development cycle, so things may change a lot from now.

In this interview, Kojima also went on to talk about his decision to partner with Sony Interactive Entertainment for his first title with his new development studio. He talked about how other places wanted detailed presentations on his plans for his next game, but he needed someone who would accept him with just a rough outline of what he wanted to do. SIE would allow him the freedom he needed to develop his ideas into a final product, and that is why he ultimately decided to partner with SIE.

What do you think about Kojima’s upcoming game? Do you still trust him to deliver something great now that he’s no longer with Konami? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!
