The 2007 RPG release from Flagship Studios, Hellgate: London, is being re-released on Steam November 15th by HanbitSoft Inc. Originally developed by a team of former Blizzard employees, the action RPG game has had a rocky history from the beginning but also an enthusiastic fan following with almost 1 million copies initially sold.
Hellgate: London is set in a post-apocalyptic future, circa 2038. Incorporating hack and slash and roguelike elements into the action RPG gameplay, the game was originally released with both single player and multiplayer modes. At the time of release, owner Flagship studios planned to release regular updates to the game, however, only two of these were published before Flagship Studios folded due to financial difficulties in August 2008, less than a year after the game’s release. In November 2008, South Korean studio HanbitSoft acquired both the Hellgate: London and Mythos properties from now-defunct Flagship. They have since redesigned and relaunched the game for Korean servers with a North American release in beta testing.
This isn’t the first time that Hellgate: London has been announced as moving to PC. In 2014, the updated version of the game listed as Hellgate Global including the Hellgate: Tokyo expansion for the original game, was put on Steam Greenlight for release by Redbana Corporation which is linked to HanbitSoft. However, in 2016 the sister company was shut down and no more plans for a Steam release were discussed until now.
According to information on the game’s Steam page, Hellgate: London will include the latest version of the updated and redesigned game as well as version 2.0 of the Hellgate: Tokyo game currently available on Korean servers, but will currently only feature single-player mode.
