Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
The first “indie” AAA game from Ninja Theory, the studio most likely know for their reboot of the Devil May Cry series, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is part hack and slash part atmospheric horror game. Players take on the role of Senua attempting to make her way to Helheim to rescue the soul of her dead lover from Hela, a goddess who receives the dead.
If you’ve already heard of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, you likely know that a key aspect of Senua’s character is her psychosis. She hears voices and in turn of course the player does as well. The voices play a direct role in the game, both as part of Senua’s character and the gameplay. Players heading the wrong direction may have the voices deride them for doing so, and sometimes they may be helpful in telling you to watch out for an enemy swinging from behind. They are key to the overall story, the main character, and an important element in the gameplay as well.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is mostly a story- and atmosphere-driven game, but there are of course other elements as well. The game features many puzzles, many of which have their own unique mechanics to a certain area, as well as some combat/boss sections that utilizes a relatively basic hack and slash set up. Senua can kick foes, use a light or heavy attack, dodge, or parry.
The game recently took second place in the 2017 TechRaptor Awards for Indie Game of the Year and third place for Best Writing. It received our Readers’ Choice Award for Indie Game of the Year as well.
