Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has sold 50K units in its first week on sale for Xbox One, developers Ninja Theory have announced.

The news came via a tweet posted on Ninja Theory's official Twitter account, accompanied by a graph showing their pledge. If Hellblade reached 50,000 units sold within its first week on sale for Xbox One, Ninja Theory promised to donate $25,000 to mental health nonprofit Mental Health America in honor of the game's approach to dealing with mental health issues.

This promise was made by the developer via Twitter just prior to the game's Xbox One release on April 11th. In the same tweet, Ninja Theory also promised that if the game reached 100,000 sales within its first week, they would double their donation to $50,000. Although Hellblade didn't quite get this far, on Xbox One at least, Ninja Theory has decided to honor its promise and donate this amount when / if the game does eventually reach 100K sales on Xbox One (which is looking pretty likely if other platforms are anything to go by).

Billed as "the first independent AAA game" during development and on release due to its high production values and lack of a major publisher, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was originally released for PC and PS4 back in August 2017. The game focuses on warrior Senua and her quest to retrieve her lover's soul from the goddess Hela. This journey is intended as an allegory for the character's struggle with psychosis, as Senua routinely hears voices and deals with hallucinations and other symptoms of the condition. Ninja Theory received significant praise for its attention to detail when working with neuroscientists, sufferers of psychosis and other knowledgeable professionals.
