Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is gearing up for its eventual release on PlayStation 4 with a technical beta this weekend. The beta begins at 10:00 AM (PST) on today (March 31st) and runs until April 2nd at 11:00 PM. During this time, players will be able to openly access the beta by downloading the game from the PlayStation store. There are no restrictions on accessing the beta as the test is designed to gauge performance with multiple concurrent users, so even those who aren't subscribed to Sony's PS Plus online service will be able to join. According to information provided by the game's official FAQ, the beta version of the game will allow players to build their own decks and participate in the tutorial and casual online matches.

Gwent has been in closed beta on PC and Xbox One since last year, steadily updating content and preparing for a move to open beta, a move which proved complicated as developer CD Projekt Red had to come up with a way to reward players who joined in the early testing rounds and especially those who made real-money purchases while not putting open beta players at a disadvantage. The PS4 version of the game is not quite at that stage yet and no progress from the technical beta will be transferred to the main game or any subsequent testing that may occur on the platform.

As we discussed in our preview of the game last year, this standalone version of the card game popularized in The Witcher 3 adds new layers of depth befitting its new status as its own title. Players will have to consider a much wider variety of cards and abilities as well as new aspects such as card ranks and, courtesy of a recent update, the relative positioning of units. The final game will feature a single-player campaign as well as the online component and will facilitate real money purchases of 'Card Kegs' which grant random cards to upgrade players decks. While this real money purchasing system is available in the current closed beta on PC and Xbox One, it will not be enabled for the PS4 technical beta.

Will you be joining the technical test? Have you been playing the game on PC or Xbox One and do PS4 owners have something to look forward to? Let us know what you think in the comments!
