This story-driven RPG is set during the sixth century and follows a group of Danish Vikings as they sail the seas and attempt to survive from season to season. The first story available in the game is the Danes of Úlfarrsted who set out on a mission of revenge and honor. In addition to the historically accurate storyline The Great Whale Road includes seasonal events, side quests, resource management, and tactical turn-based combat.

The game is very much a Viking simulation game in which players will make decisions about gathering and using resources, interacting with other peoples and the success of your own crew. There’s also tactical turn-based combat to master. The combat combines a deck of cards with a traditional battle grid for a unique and methodical experience.

Two more storylines for the game are planned to offer the perspectives of different cultures. Both the Franks and Frisians’ stories will become available as free updates sometime before the summer. The March release will include the full Danish storyline and core feature set of the game.

Upon its release, The Great Whale Road will receive game improvements and updates. New mechanics will bring deeper gameplay and the combat and resource management aspects of the game have been refined. After eight months of Early Access and a total two years of work, Sunburned Games’ first title is finally ready to launch.

The Great Whale Road features digitally hand-drawn art, colorful characters, an atmospheric soundtrack and an extensively researched setting with cultural flourishes. On March 30, 2017, this story-driven RPG with tactical turn-based combat will be available on Mac, Linux and PC via Steam. It will also be available on the Windows Store.
