Gather around an ale-soaked table and I'll tell ye a tale of high adventure. GoG’s RPG library has been significantly expanded with old 80s and 90s Dungeons & Dragons classics. All are digital premieres, meaning this is the first time they’ve been made available outside of hard copies. Before now you’d have to comb garage sales for moldy boxes or get your hands on Gamefest Forgotten Realms Classics, a physical collection released several years ago.

The games have been broken up into three deals. The Archives Collection 1 contains Eye of the Beholder 1, 2, and 3. Eye of the Beholder is a set of real-time roleplaying games, and for those with an almost obsessive sense of continuity, a little fiddling should allow for importing characters across each title in the series.

The Archives Collection 2 has Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Hillsfar, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, and Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures.

The Archives Collection 3 sells Dungeon Hack and Menzoberranzan. Every game mentioned is compatible with Windows 10, as GoG have been working to update their library for modern operating systems, releasing a statement back in July:

When GOG launched in 2008, Windows XP was by far the most popular operating system among gamers. Ever since then we've meticulously tested our entire library to introduce Day 1 compatibility with every new Windows release. We've done it for Windows 7, we've done it for Windows 8 - now we're doing it all again for Windows 10.

There’s also another coinciding promotion which not so coincidently sells slightly more modern Dungeons & Dragons classics (from the year 1999 onwards) like Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2, Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard, The Temple of Elemental Evil, and Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone.

Quick Take

This is pretty huge for GoG. If there were anything major missing from their classic library, particularly from the RPG genre, many folks including myself would've point out the old Dungeons & Dragons games. Now nothing stands in their way!
