In a crossover that seems strange but immediately makes sense once you actually consider it, Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is coming to Monster Hunter World in a free update early next year.

The collaboration between Capcom and Polish studio CD Projekt Red will see players take the role of the infamous monster slayer (fully voiced by Doug Cockle) in a series of "Witcher-inspired quests".

"The collaboration sees Monster Hunter: World players take on the mantle of Geralt of Rivia — a professional monster slayer equipped with superhuman strength and reflexes — and has them take on a series of Witcher-inspired quests. These offer a unique gameplay experience blending RPG mechanics of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Monster Hunter: World’s game systems."

The free update will become available to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players in early 2019 with "the PC release to follow soon". More details to come at a later date.

This crossover event was announced during the Special Developer Update stream earlier today. The stream also featured Capcom's plans for Monster Hunter World in 2019.

First off were two variations of the Kulve Taroth and Nergigante. The "Arch-tempered Kulve Taroth: The Fury of El Dorado" quest will be available between December 19, 2018, and January 3rd, 2019, whilst the "Arch-tempered Nergigante" (quite a mouthful) will be coming in Spring 2019. Secondly, Capcom announced that the Appreciation Fest will be coming just in time for the game's 1-year anniversary. Players will be able to enjoy a number of seasonal event activities and unique quests and items for a limited time.

Iceborne, a brand new expansion coming in Autumn 2019. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will feature a story beginning after the events of Monster Hunter World and will include new quest rank, monsters, locales, equipment, and moves. Capcom claims that the upcoming expansion will be the same size as "Ultimate" or "G" entries in the series. Pricing details and further information will be coming in Spring.

The PC version will be getting these updates, including the Iceborne expansion, but Capcom gave no further details.

If you've yet to try out Monster Hunter World, a trial version will be available for a limited time. You can get the full Monster Hunter experience (up to 3 star and Hunter rank 4 quests) between December 11 and December 17.
