Owners of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080 Reference model are reporting erratic fan speed changes according to TechPowerUp.
Some of the complaints are coming from people who bought the Founder's Edition of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080. The Founder's Edition is the first run of the cards and was released by NVIDIA themselves. Customers paid $699 for their Founder's Edition cards compared to the $599 MSRP for 1080s that will be released by other companies in the near future.
Users are experiencing issues with the fan's speed changing from 2,000RPM to 3,000 RPM at seemingly random times regardless of load. Users reported that the change in fan speed had no correlation with being in a game or other high load being placed on the card. Temperature did not seem to be a factor in the fan speed changes, either.
This issue may not be relegated solely to the Founder's Series. TechPowerUp highlighted a forum thread on the official GeForce Forums that talks about this issue, and some of the forum posters stated that they were having the same issue despite owning third-party GeForce GTX 1080s. While some users echoed the complaints of the original post, a handful of users stated that they had no problems with the card whatsoever.
Third party solutions to controlling fan speed didn't seem to affect the problem. Users reported that GPU management programs such as MSI Afterburner had no effect on the fan speed.
The GeForce GTX 1080 was revealed earlier this month as NVIDIA's newest flagship card. The 1080 is the first card in NVIDIA's "10 series" of GPUS and the first NVIDIA card to take advantage of their new Pascal architecture.
