Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition has revealed that the upcoming shooter for Xbox One will have microtransactions for cosmetic items. Players will buy crates that will contain random cards that have different cosmetic effects on characters in the multiplayer. In an interview with Gamespot studio head Rod Fergusson stated "I feel like that paradigm of cards is really clear to understand for collectibles, like the ability to collect things. We had weapon skins and character skins, so that idea of collecting cards is just easily understood. It felt like it added some engagement in terms of its not the, 'Oh, I like Tiger Stripe. I bought Tiger Stripe. I'm done. I don't need to engage with that system anymore. There's no need for me to hang around.'"

He likens the idea to opening a pack of Magic: The Gathering cards. "If I could just buy the one card I want then I'm out, then you lose it, right?" He also drew comparisons to the way Hearthstone's card system works. He did make sure to specify that the items are completely cosmetic and can also be earned through normal play. This is nothing new to the series. There was a similar system in Gears of War 3 and the Gears of War Ultimate Edition that was released for Xbox One last year and PC earlier this year.

Gears of War 4 will be launching for the Xbox One on October 11 and the multiplayer beta starts of April 18th.

Quick Take

Microtransactions have oft been a dirty word in the gaming scene, but with GTA V recently revealed to have generated half a BILLION dollars with their microtransactions and the popularity of the aforementioned Hearthstone I think gamers are warming up to the idea that microtransactions can add something to an experience if executed properly.
