Formally announced at the Xbox E3 show in 2019, Gears of War 5, also known as simply Gears 5, is the next installment in Microsoft’s popular and acclaimed Gears franchise, following up on the heels of Gears of War 4, released originally in October 2016. Following the franchise’s format as a third person shooter, Gears of War 5 allows the player to traverse an expansive and crumbling world as player character Kait to uncover the origins of and truth behind the Locust, along with her squad. Several types of co-op play with be available for players, with further information to be released closer to the release date.
According to the official Gears of War 5 website,
“The world is crumbling. Humanity’s reliance on technology has become their downfall and enemies are uniting to wipe out all survivors. As Kait you must journey across the biggest, most beautiful Gears world to uncover the origins of the Locust, and fight with your squad to protect what’s left.

Play solo or with a friend in local split-screen co-op, or online co-op. Battle alongside your friends anywhere with cross-play between Xbox One and PC.
Skim across glaciers, sail over deserts and descend into sunken ruins to discover the largest and most diverse Gears world ever created.

A tech test of the Versus multiplayer mode will take place on July 17, 2019 and Microsoft has promised further details and previews will be available closer to the game’s release this autumn.
Gears of War 5 will be released for Xbox One and PC with crossplay available for both platforms on September 10, 2019. It is developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studio.
