Gamestop recently entered the world of game publishing with the announcement of Insomniac's Song of the Deep and now they have announced Gametrust, their publishing label. They first began work with Insomniac the developers of Ratchet and Clank and Sunset Overdrive with the metroidvania Song of the Deep. Now they have established a working relationship with Ready at Dawn, the developers of The Order: 1886; Frozenbyte the indie studio behind the Trine series, and Tequila Works the studio behind Deadlight. Gametrust has said they will be announcing more developers that have been added to the label soon as well as announce what games are scheduled to be published on the label.

Gametrust is looking to publish more indie and midrange games, rather than the typical 60 dollar AAA price tag. “We think we can address a hole in the market, we continue to hear from our core gamer base that there is a need for more independent games. Its sole focus is to bring great independent titles to our stores and the world through physical distribution.” If you look at the traditional publishing model, there is a heavy reliance on Triple-A titles with $40 million to $50 million development budgets,” said Mark Stanley, vice president of internal development and diversification at GameStop in a recent interview. “We see a hole for games that cost zero to $15 million to make. Those are hard to bring to the market, and our conversations show the need. There is no other publisher who can guarantee a retail presence. Beyond that, we are looking for titles that could be Triple-A. Song of the Deep is an example, where we are launching a line of books and possibly a TV deal or collectibles.”

"GameTrust will revolutionize the game development and distribution process by offering a new way for independent developers to create and introduce their own IP to a broad gaming audience and for gamers to discover and enjoy exclusive new video game experiences," Stanley said. Gamestop said that Gametrust is not involved in the creative process behind games, but rather Gametrust will invest in finding and curating unique gaming experiences across many platforms including PC and VR. Gamestop has said that it will be using it's 6,200+ stores to leverage support and exposure for the games appearing on the Gametrust label.
