The free weekend coincides with a patch that makes a variety of changes, additions, and balance tweaks. The Forerunner, Harbinger, and Vanguard upgrades are not being offered for free along with the game, but they are discounted at 50% off until February 1st.

The reasoning behind giving away the game is explained by Edge Case Games CEO James Brooksby:

“Today’s update brings us one step closer to the full release of Fractured Space and we want to celebrate the game’s progress by giving everyone a chance to play and own the game for free. Whether you have played in the past or not, this is a great moment to start your adventure with Fractured Space, with a chance to make your mark as a new Captain on equal footing with all players.”

The tech tree in Fractured Space is also being set in its final version. All players are going to be reset back to level one. Any credit, experience, and ships earned by players after the reset will be available to them after the launch of the game. Fractured Space is anticipated to reach full release later in 2016. The game is slated to be Free To Play. Players can treat this as an opportunity to get a head start on everyone else waiting for the full release of the game.

Fractured Space has had steady development with a focus on community input ever since its launch on Steam Early Access in November 2014. Edge Case Games was formed largely from the team that created the game Strike Suit Zero.
