On Tuesday, April 30, Epic Games announced on Twitter the introduction of Large Party Support, which will allow up to 16 players in your party in any game mode, or Limited Time Modes that support more than 4-player squads, including Creative Mode and also the Avengers: Endgame mode while it lasts. This is very likely due to the increase in the number of concurrent players on average and also during events, as gangs of players come together to experience the most hectic and intense Fortnite experience with dozens of players.

Fortnite is not only one of the world's most popular games, but it is also currently the game with the highest amount of concurrent players, as per a report from Variety on the Marshmello concert on February 2, when the number of concurrent players rose to a peak of 10.7 million players, breaking their previous record of 8.3 million during in-game butterfly event in November 2018. In March 2019 the game also peaked with a number of 250 total registered players, according to Statista. The game is, without a doubt, the current undisputed leader of the gaming industry, and it will probably stay at the top for a while.
Many other games would definitely struggle in terms of matchmaking with parties that large and keeping the overall experience fresh, but Fortnite's ability to maintain peaks of 8 to 10 million players means that the proportions are something the game can deal with without the usual matchmaking issues that might arise with other such games.
