Final Fantasy XV launched on November 29, 2016 to fans that had been long awaiting the next installment to the Final Fantasy franchise with excitement. In a recent meeting with FFXV director Hajime Tabata, DualShockers learned how successful the game has been in sales. During their trip to Square Enix’s Business Division 2 development floor in Tokyo, Japan, DualShockers gained insight into not only the game’s financial success but also what the development team is working on now.

During their visit, Hajime Tabata was asked how many copies of Final Fantasy XV would need to be sold for the company to recoup the cost of making the game. His answer was that the number of copies needed to break even was met on day one of the game’s launch. Square Enix announced soon after the title’s release that they had sold five million copies by day one (November 29th), including digital and physical copies for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Apparently, that was enough to cover the cost of making the game.

Although FFXV has already made back the money invested in making it, the game’s not done bringing in a profit. Square Enix announced in January that they’d sold an additional one million copies of the game bringing their total sales up to six million and guaranteeing that they’ve more than broken even on the game. However, Tabata or Square Enix has not disclosed how much total profit has been made on Final Fantasy XV or the total amount it took to produce it.

On top of sales, FFXV is making money on post-launch DLC such as Booster Packs and the upcoming Gladiolus and Prompto DLC. Indeed Tabata has revealed that a significant portion of the game’s development team is still working on content for it. Out of the Business Division 2 development force, 70% have been retained to continue working on Final Fantasy XV while the rest have moved on to other projects. The focus of the remaining team is on free updates, DLC and VR.

In addition to working on updates, new content and a PlayStation VR version of the game, the FFXV team has been experimenting with some new technology as well. Tabata allowed access to their latest technical experiment which runs Final Fantasy XV with a powerful engine creating better and more realistic graphics than the game currently achieves on consoles. This experiment runs on a powerful PC with two Pascal GTX 1080 video cards running in SLI configuration. It is not currently known what Square Enix plans to do with this technology and any images or video of it have not been released to the public.
