Announced as part of Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show slate, Square Enix will be bringing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition to Switch and PS4 sometime next year. The original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released for the Gamecube back in 2003, and it was followed by five more games a few years later. The PS4 release will mark the first time any Crystal Chronicles game is available on a non-Nintendo console or handheld. We'll know more about the changes coming to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition before its launch next year.

Set in a fantasy realm following a catastrophe, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles plays very differently than other Final Fantasy games. 1000 years ago, a meteor struck and shattered the crystal protecting the world. In its wake, miasma and monsters started dotting the countryside, and civilization's expansion all but stopped. Life still remains in the remaining shards of the crystal, but these shards require a constant stream of energy from magical sources and need a dedicated band of adventurers to get this energy. While Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles can be played solo, the action RPG combat is at its best when played with three of your friends.

The sole game developed by The Game Designers Studio, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was incredibly successful both at home in Japan and abroad. Primarily a local multiplayer game, it involved hooking up four Gameboy Advances up to a Gamecube via the Link Cable, much like in Four Swords Adventures. Lauded for its creative music, fresh gameplay and offering a couch co-op experience unlike anything else available for Gamecube, it easily sailed past one million copies sold and became a favorite for fans around the world. With Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition sailing onto PlayStation 4s and Switches sometime next year, we'll see just how well the action holds up.

That wasn't all that Square Enix had for us, though. After the surprise announcement that The Last Remnant would be leaving Steam, many were left scratching their heads in confusion. It seems that Square Enix had other plans, and announced that The Last Remnant Remastered would launch in December on PlayStation 4. There is no word currently if (or when) The Last Remnant might return to Steam.

Set in a complex political world, The Last Remnant mixes large-scale battles with personal drama. Four different races vie for control of the Remnants, powerful magical artifacts that have different properties, depending on their appearance. Within those four races are numerous city-states, all struggling for survival. When a young swordsman and his sister encounter the army of one such city-state, the sister is kidnapped, and the two are inevitably drawn into a massive conflict.

A joint project from the developers of Final Fantasy and Romancing SaGaThe Last Remnant was a polarizing game on its release. While Eastern outlets praised the battle system and originality, Western reviewers lambasted The Last Remnant for numerous technical problems on the Xbox 360 version, issues that carried over to the PC port. Both sides agreed that the world and political intrigue was well-developed and intriguing, and something out of the norm for Square Enix. Hopefully, we get our chance to play through the remastered version of The Last Remnant before long.
