Far Cry Primal has been rated M by the ESRB according to the game’s entry on the ESRB website.

Far Cry Primal had its world premiere at The Game Awards 2015.

The M Rating for Far Cry Primal falls in line with ratings for recent previous titles in the series; Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragonand Far Cry 4 were all also rated M.

Previous Far Cry titles have typically taken place in exotic fictional locales in the modern era. Far Cry Primal breaks from this mold by being set in the Stone Age. Gamers will play as Takkar, the last survivor of his hunting party in a dangerous world filled with mammoths and saber tooth tigers. Although it is set much further in the past compared to previous titles in the series, players can expect the usual fare of weapon crafting, exploration, and assaulting outposts that we’ve come to expect in Ubisoft titles of this style.

The ESRB rating mainly relates to the expected blood, gore, and violence in such a setting. There’s also note made of nudity and sexual content, but these themes haven’t featured heavily as part of the overall package in past titles. Specific noted instances of graphic violence include stealth kills in which enemies are gruesomely stabbed in close quarters. There’s also mention of dismembered corpses as well as other types of mutilation and torture that one would expect from the particularly brutal setting of the Stone Age.

Far Cry Primal will release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 23, 2016. A PC release is expected sometime in March 2016.

Do you think the change of setting and gameplay in Far Cry Primal will breathe fresh life into the Far Cry series or do you think it’s just a gimmick? How do you figure Ubisoft will handle their typical “climb a tower” mechanic in this setting? Let us know in the comments below!
