Fallout: New California, a mod for Fallout: New Vegas that has been in the works for 7 years, is now available for download according to a news post on its ModDB page.

Fallout: New Vegas is certainly no stranger to expansive mods, and a brand-new one has just been released: Fallout: New California. This expansive mod is set in 2260, 20 years after the conclusion of Fallout 2New California is an entirely standalone experience that doesn't interact with your New Vegas save file in any way, so you can install this right now without fearing any issues with any games in progress. Take a peek at the Narrative Trailer to get an idea of what it's all about:

As always, installing a mod can be a bit tricky with Bethesda games. Players who got their game on Steam or on physical media should first install a patch that makes the game able to use 4 gigs of memory; GOG players won't need to take this step. After that, you can use Nexus Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 to install the mod as you would any other. The Fallout: New California team advises against making use of Fallout Mod Manager or Nexus Mod Manager. It can also be installed manually by unzipping the file and dropping the contents in your Data folder - don't forget to activate NewCalifornia.esm in your load order to get it running!

Players will be able to enjoy nearly 50 distinct quests (and quite a few more events that pop up through emergent gameplay). A playthrough of Fallout: New California should take 6-8 hours at the minimum and 15-30 hours for completionists. The mod features 13 endings in total.

This is still a beta, so there are a handful of known issues and who knows how many unknown ones. In particular, a few areas of the game will result in frame drops (and may result in crashes if you don't have the 4GB patch!) The team is hard at work optimizing these areas and hammering out other problems, but the mod is otherwise perfectly playable right now.

If you'd like to get your hands on Fallout: New California, simply head on over to the mod's page and download it for yourself right now. It requires the base game of Fallout: New Vegas to play it and none of the DLC, although the whole package is pretty fantastic and you'd be kinda nuts not to buy the lot. You can get it on Steam or the Humble Store for PC and DRM-free on GOG for $19.99 or your regional equivalent - though it might be best to wait a few days for the Steam Halloween Sale.
