Bethesda has released an update on the status of PlayStation 4 mods for Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. Unfortunately, the news isn't good - at this point in time, PlayStation 4 will not be getting user mods at all.

The statement is quite brief and was released to the world a short time ago.

After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

Bethesda stated that they will provide an update if things change, but for now, it looks like mods for Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition are a no-go on the PlayStation 4.

We've reached out to Bethesda and Sony for comment on the matter. Bethesda's Pete Hines has responded and stated that all of the information they can share at the time is in this announcement. We will update this story as we find out more.

Quick Take

Mods for consoles would have been obviously lacking compared to mods on PC for any number of reasons. There are no "unapproved" mods on PC because you can just install them manually. You can make the games look more beautiful or add absurd new features (and that requires raw horsepower that consoles don't have). With these exceptions aside, I have to wonder what element of modding was holding Sony back - was it the ability for mods to update & patch themselves? Was it the potential content of the mods? We'll have to wait and see, I suppose.

Do you think Sony should allow mods for Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on the PlayStation 4? Why do you think they're reluctant to allow them to happen? Do you think this will have an impact on people's decision to purchase one of the newer PlayStation 4 consoles? Let us know in the comments below!
