Skyrim Mod Support Special Edition

The Skyrim Special Edition Release is fast approaching, and it's no wonder that the question of mod support for PlayStation has once again been asked. Prepare to celebrate, then, as Bethesda has announced that mod support will be coming to both the Skyrim Special Edition, and Fallout 4 on PlayStation 4. In addition, the announcement also promises native 4K rendering on PS4 Pro for both titles.

The Skyrim Special Edition will launch on October 28th with both features enabled. Modding will still be done via the Creation Kit, available from Bethesda.net, but will be slightly restricted from the total freedom PC players are used to. Uploading external assets will not be allowed for PS4 mods, so no Macho Man Randy Savage Dragons this time.

Players will be able to browse and download the available mods directly from within the game. The mod treatment is coming to Skyrim first, but Fallout 4 will be getting both mods and 4K support "once the work on Skyrim is finished." Which is suitably vague, given the troubled build up to mod support on PS4. It was previously stated by a Bethesda spokesperson, as recently as September 9th, that:

After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.[...]until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

After such a long dialogue between Bethesda and Sony over the former bringing mods to their consoles, it's perhaps surprising to see such a definitive statement reversed in so short a time.

To show there are no hard feelings, and that Bethesda and Sony are all smiles and handshakes again. The developer has credited the power of the PS4 Pro as allowing them to render in native 4K. The screenshots you can see above were included with the original post to show it off, depending on how you view them.

Skyrim Special Edition, which includes the base game and all DLC from the game of the year edition, is releasing on consoles on the 28th of October. Fallout 4 and it's associated DLC are available now. Both games received critical acclaim; with Skyrim averaging a 94 on metacritic, and Fallout 4 has an opencritic average of 87.

Quick Take

Oh dear; a reason for me to re-buy Skyrim, the game I spent nearly 300 hours with on PC. I'm sure my life will recover at some point. As for Fallout 4, this might just make me pick up the season pass and jump back in. I never did get to that 'evil player' play through.

Well, how about that? A total turn around on mods from Sony and Bethesda. How do you feel; excited, confused? Does this make you more likely to pick up Skyrim Special Edition Day One? And who else is joining us back in the Wasteland? Let us know in the comments below.
