Fable Legends, the newest spin-off game in the Fable franchise, has just been announced to be a free to play title. Fable Legends will be a 4v1 multiplayer fable experience where you can play as either one of four heroes fighting the forces of evil or play as a villain and command your troops in an attempt to crush the heroes. Fable Legends will be released on Xbox One and Windows 10 and will be one of the first games to support cross platform between the two.

To alleviate any fears of consumers on the Fable Legends a F.A.Q has been created to explain how they plan to run the game. The first thing that is extremely stressed is that you don’t have to pay a cent on the game and you can play from the beginning to the end. While playing the game all of the different characters will be completely free to play but they will move in and out of rotation after a set amount of time. All of the stats of heroes as well as equipment that you have given them will stay with them even when out of rotation so that when they’re back in rotation they will be just as you’ve left them. If you want to be able to play with a character out of the regular rotation then you will be able to earn them through gameplay or by purchasing them.

Fable Legends Character

Fight or command strange creatures as the Villain in Fable Legends

People who do want to pay will not get an advantage over those who don’t pay, apparently the things that you pay for don’t affect the gameplay at all. You will be able to customize your character with in-game silver that you have earned or by purchasing it with real world money. They will be some cosmetic items that are only available through real world money transactions. While playing as the villain creatures that are not native to a map will have to be unlocked through game progression or by purchasing them.

Fable Legends will be one of the first games to be multiplatform across Windows 10 and Xbox One and with that not only do you get to play with the other platform but any purchases that you make in one version of the game will carry over to the other, so if you were to get a cosmetic upgrade on Fable Legends for Xbox One then you can access it on Fable Legends for Windows 10.

If you wish to read the full F.A.Q then you can head to the official F.A.Q page. If you want you can also sign up for the Fable Legends Beta via their website.

What do you think of Fable Legends being a Free to Play? Were you planning on buying it anyway? What are you most looking forward to about the game?

I have been playing all kinds of games for as long as I can remember with a particular interest in action adventure and platforming titles. While I am primarily an Xbox gamer I also spend a fair bit of time on the PS4 and on my PC in VR.

Seems like a good model. If I actually like the game I’d definitely pay for customization options.

  • unless this releases on steam, I don’t care

  • Alex

Wait you mean Fable Legends won’t have a single player campaign?
Strange they could have just charged 60€/$ like Evolve did..

  • Andrew Stretch

Do you mind if I ask why you wouldn’t play it unless it’s on steam?

  • Because, steam is a better platform than xboxlive….duh.

  • Andrew Stretch

I don’t actually think there has been any word on how windows 10 games will run, whether it be through the Xbox store on windows 10 or if it will work through a third party like steam. Does the quality of the game not speak more than whether you launch it through steam or not?

  • When they state “win 10” they mean through the new xbox app system for windows 10. They played a demo for it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvwHiwC5g7c#t=523
they haven’t announced it being released for another platform yet, like steam which is a better game client than a xbox client.

  • Andrew Stretch

I’m sorry to hear that because it’s on a different client than steam you’re unwilling to try a free game. That’s a shame, I hope it does eventually come to steam for you so you can try it out, it looks like a fun game!

  • it doesn’t look that appealing to me anyway. So, I won’t be caring that much

  • lunaticFortune

Well, so long as they don’t bungle the cross-platform aspect like they did with the Shadowrun FPS back on Xbox 360, it might be okay, even though I don’t have much interest in another Fable game.

Also, is it just me, or is asymmetrical multiplayer becoming a Big Thing now?

  • lunaticFortune

It sounds similar to Warframe’s cash market, but more considerate for a PVP-centric game.

  • Andrew Stretch

I’ve noticed it myself a lot, I’m still not sure if I really like it either…

  • Nick

    You lost me at Fable.

  • Borous

I was curious because a 4 player Fable adventure could be pretty good if the characters are fun and the adventure is interesting. Finding out it’s 4 vs 1 and free to play has thoroughly put me off of this.
Oh well not like I’m buying windows 10 or an Xbox 1 anyway.
For better or worse I’d like to see a real Fable 4.
