The Escapists was a big success for Team17 (it is owned by nearly 800 000 people on Steam according to Steam Spy), and it’s little surprise that it is getting a straight up sequel. Revealed at TwitchCon today, the sequel is called The Escapists 2 and is set for release in 2017. Along with the announcement was a reveal trailer, so let’s take a look at it!

The sequel promises to add in many new features to the game that Mouldy Studios has been working on, with the headliner being that the game offers multiplayer. Set up to be drop-in/drop-out play, you will be able to play either locally (with split-screen) or online with the multiplayer and has both co-op and versus modes available. This will be the first time that the series will feature multiplayer.

Two other big shifts are a whole new combat system and a new graphical style. The combat system is completely revamped and features lock-on targeting, a blocking system, and a mixture of light and heavy attacks. The new style has gotten some criticism in the YouTube comments (what doesn’t), but attempts to be more immersive or realistic while maintaining the series’ trademark style.

Along with the new graphics is new customization options for your character avatar. There are a lot more things you can do, including the option of whether your character is male or female and what sort of hair style you want to have.

Gameplay is getting some looks beyond the combat as well. There are all new ways to escape; one example provided is that you’ll be able to tie together knotted sheets to climb down from the windows in the new multi-level prisons. There’ll be other new craftable items as well, with a taser being the provided example of something you’ll be able to build. Other activities are being added to the game, like joining a band and learning to paint.

On the Steam store page, the developers say that they haven’t forgotten The Escapists and that there will be more updates coming for the game.

The Escapists 2 is set for a 2017 release on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
