Once again EGX Rezzed has graced the city of London with its presence and with it comes a bunch of new games to play. I had the chance to sit down with Pavel, spokesman for Hidden Deep, an upcoming 2D action adventure, sci-fi thriller, which is set to be released for PC, Mac, and Linux.

You're tasked with uncovering the mysterious disappearance of a group of researchers who had been leading an expedition beneath the ocean floor. With a four man group at your disposal, its up to you to venture through the unexplored regions of this dark and mysterious land beneath the seabed.

Many obstacles will stand in your way, ranging from strange anomalies to dangerous aliens. Though not all is bad since a range of equipment is available throughout the game. One such piece is the flying-scanner, allowing players to scan unreachable areas in the level.

The player can also make use of heavy machinery in order to dig tunnels, build bridges, and more. When using such machinery, the game's physics simulation and destructible terrain system comes into play.

A lot of effort has been put into making a rich and believable experience. The developer mentioned that each animation is motion capture based, and it certainly shows. When running, jumping, or even climbing, you can feel the weight from whomever your controlling. Akin to 1989's Prince of Persia, every animation is superbly realistic.

Even the death animations are enjoyable to watch as well. As I played through the demo, I had miss-calculated one of my jumps causing a character (Hicks) to plummet to his death. Upon hitting the ground, there was a big resounding crunch. His helmet flew off and there was blood everywhere. Brilliant.

As I progressed through the demo, the overall feeling of dread and suspense was evident. Deadly alien organisms could appear at any moment, waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack. From disgusting worm-like creatures that appear from above you and strike with no warning, to organic spikes that protrude from the floor and kill you instantly,  being cautious is a must in this game.

It's worth noting that this entire game is being developed by a single person, Łukasz Kałuski, with the use of his own engine. Through the many discussions I've had with Łukasz, you can tell that he takes great pride in his work. Being a lover of all things Aliens, The Thing and Another World, he aims to create a game with a dark plot, depressive environment, and a realistic quality to it as well.

Overall, Hidden Deep is the kind of game I've been waiting for years to play, allowing me to live out an interactive Prometheus-esque situation.
