The End is Nigh Header

Seemingly tired of all the Pre-E3 announcements this week, Edmund McMillen has pulled back the curtain on what he and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, Bombernauts) have been working on. The duo (who have worked together before on games you can now find in The Basement Collection) are putting out The End is Nigh, an adventure platformer about the end of the world. This new game appears to be made from the Super Meat Boy mold, with super hard precise platforming being the order of the day. This is all on display in the game's teaser trailer, which also features Red Letter Media's Rich Evans voicing Ash.

The game's Steam store page promises over 600 levels and plenty of collectibles, including 12 retro cartridge games that you can load up and play. There is also a sample of the game's retro music on YouTube that was revealed early to participants of an ARG and composed by frequent Edmund collaborator Ridiculon. We can expect the PC version of The End is Nigh to release on Steam July 12th, with a Nintendo Switch version (and "probably more consoles") to follow sometime afterward.

Quick Take

This is the kind of sequel I can get behind. It follows Super Meat Boy mechanically while giving a new environment for players to explore. I'm sadly more in the Isaac camp, but I can still appreciate Meat Boy and I'll certainly be looking to give this game a shot at some point. Of course, with E3 coming up, July 12th might as well be 10,000 years in the future, and I do hope that this announcement doesn't get buried under news about Crackdown 3 and a new F-Zero.

If I keep saying it, it will eventually be true.
