Very few games can capture my attention like A Plague Tale: Innocence has.  From its bleak and grounded portrayal of a ravished France at the height of the plague and Inquisition, to its unforgiving enemy presence in the form of a sea of rats and its instantly likable characters, A Plague Tale: Innocence was a for sure candidate for one of our Best of E3 2018 awards.   While the demo itself was hands-off, the game was so captivating it left me wanting more.  The way the sunlight cut through the foggy sky and grazed the environment ever so kindly and brash all at the same time is a feeling I can’t quite express with words.  The lack of saturation and muted tones are more than appropriate when it comes to the storyline of A Plague Tale: Innocence.  Because after all this is a dark time in history, with a dark plot and characters you can’t help but root for.

Nick had a chance to sit down with the dev from Focus Home and talk about the game!

The game is strikingly beautiful, but what is also a point of intrigue are the puzzles that the player must accomplish in order to push through the rats and other enemies alike.  Our main character has an old-fashioned sling shot that can host a variety of ammo types, and when used can help you in more ways than just combat.  Another interesting component (which was obvious at the menu screen) is that the rats are afraid of fire.  Knowing this bleak story and gameplay component is all the player has initially walking in.  The simple yet complicated premise was and is enough to keep my interest piqued until the release date later this year.

Let’s just make one thing clear, there are a lot of rats.  This was puzzling at first but after the dev team explained their reasoning behind why, things started to click.  The bubonic plague was an unfortunate time in world history and the developers wanted to convey it properly without turning their world into a fantastical realm without meaning.  Being able to portray this sickness through means of a deadly rodent is a methodology that grounds the narrative and still gives the player the escape they are looking for.  When it came time to hand out awards, it was obvious I wanted to give it to A Plague Tale: Innocence; the innovation and secrecy that surrounds this game is so enticing that I haven’t stopped thinking about since the convention ended on the 14th of June.

Plague Tale comes out sometime this year on PS4, PC, Xbox One and will feature XboxOneX and PS4 Pro enhancements.
