In the fantastic and expansive world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, there were some players content to sit around and play cards with bartenders, enough so that developers CD Projekt Red decided to make an entire game about it. Gwent is the game of strategy and deceit, where over the course of three rounds you must try to end up with a larger army on your side of the board than your opponent. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is more of that, and then even more. TechRaptor got the chance to be among the first to play Gwent at E3, which you can read more about here. We also got the chance to talk to narrative designer of Gwent Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz.
Tomaszkiewicz talked to us a bit about the single player campaign in Gwent, which unlike other digital card games like Hearthstone, will be more extensive and fitting with the spirit of its parent Witcher series, with player made decisions and storylines for each faction. Within each campaign you recruit friends, earn cards, and lose cards as well, depending on the decisions you make. Fans can expect some familiar friends, as well as some new characters from a new perspective. The single player campaigns will have their own decks, so players will not have to play them in order to get specific cards for competitive play. He stressed that Gwent will have no resource management and is based solely on the cards you receive at the beginning of the game. Tomaszkiewicz says that Gwent was not only an opportunity to give fans a highly demanded game (CD Projekt Red says they’ve received thousands of emails about it) but also to further explore the universe of Witcher, and the characters and quests they didn’t get to explore as much before.
We forgot to mention in the video portion, but we asked about what platforms Gwent will be on. So far the plan is only for PC, Xbox One, and PS4, but they are not ruling out mobile at this time. That and other details are still being fleshed out, like how players can get cards in the multiplayer and the cost of single player campaigns and packs. The closed beta will begin in September 2016.
