Dragon's Crown Pro, a remaster of Vanillaware's 2013 sidescrolling action RPG is coming to Western shores sometime next year. The news was revealed by Atlus USA ahead of Dragon's Crown Pro's appearance at PlayStation Experience later this week. The remaster brings 4K visuals as well as a new soundtrack from Hitoshi Sakimoto, plus both Japanese and English audio. Not only that, but cross-play and cross-save compatibility with the original release, and the remaster will include the Storyteller Voice DLC for free. Dragon's Crown Pro does not have a release date yet, but Vanillaware and Atlus USA are aiming for a Spring 2018 release, and the remaster will cost $49.99.

Dragon's Crown continued Vanillaware's streak of combining gorgeous hand-painted visuals with sidescrolling 2D action. Much like Odin Sphere, and its remake Odin Sphere: LeifthraisirDragon's Crown combined a colorful (and sometimes provocative) cast of characters with refined action and multiplayer play. With six different character to choose from, plus a host of weapons and equipment to gather and maintain, Dragon's Crown placed much of its emphasis on its gear and gameplay. The story was never going to set the gaming world on fire, yet lead designer George Kamitami hoped his game would change the action RPG genre, much like what Golden Axe did for the 2D sidescroller.

It is worth noting that Japan will likely not have much of a lead on the Western audience for Dragon's Crown Pro, as Atlus delayed the Japanese release to February 8th recently. Considering the original releases were only two weeks apart, one might expect the Western and European releases to be close behind once again. Regardless of its date, Dragon's Crown Pro will launch at $49.99 sometime in Spring 2018.

Quick Take

With the success of Odin Sphere: Leifthraisir and the upcoming release of Dragon's Crown Pro, it might be time to start looking at other Vanillaware releases due for a remake. We might see GrimGrimoire, an RTS developed for the PS2 make another appearance on PlayStation consoles, and Muramasa: The Demon Blade might get a second re-release, appearing on the Wii initially in 2009, and remade for the Vita in 2013. In any case, Vanillaware has a number of games in their library, and the hopeful success of Dragon's Crown Pro might mean we'll get to see more of them.
