In the latest fighting game news, Dragon Quest jumps joyfully into the fray of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The signature Hero hurtled onto Nintendo Switch consoles as the latest DLC Smash character. Players who own the Fighters Pass or who have purchased the Challenger Pack 2 can download the courageous character today.
Donning a stunning sword and shield, the Hero also features iconic Dragon Quest spells such as "Woosh" and "Zap." Featuring four different versions of the Hero coming from various Dragon Quest games, there's a dashing design for just about anyone. One costume comes from the upcoming Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, releasing September 27 on the Nintendo Switch. Others include the Hero from Dragon Quest III, IV, and VIII.
To celebrate the new franchise, Nintendo added in a new stage and several Dragon Quest music tracks. Yggrasil's Altar features various places from the upcoming title. Perceptive players can spot slimy spectators in the background. Alongside the new content, a free software update adds a "Very Easy" Adventure mode, an in-game online tournament module, the ability to speculate on the winner in a spectator match, and a bevy of other features.
In addition to the "Woosh," "Zap," and "Frizz" spells, the Command Selection special gives the Hero a versatile moveset. Sakurai mentions that the Hero possesses more Special Moves than any other fighter in the series to date. Commands include spells for guaranteed critical hits, movement buffs, healing, and even instant-death attacks. Such versatility comes at a price, however: the player must navigate the menu in the heat of battle, and said menu is randomly generated. This requires split-second decision making but rewards quick fingers and lucky menu layouts.
