Dragon Quest Heroes II, the sequel to last year’s Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below is coming west on PlayStation 4. The title will release in North America on April 25th, 2017 and Europe on April 28th. Despite the title’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita releases in Japan, and the original title’s Steam release in the west, so far the title will be coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 when it makes the journey westward. Dragon Quest Heroes II follows the Musou-style gameplay of the first title, with a few tweaks.
Square Enix’s announcement follows a hectic last few months for Dragon Quest fans in the west. Between the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VII and the eclectic Dragon Quest Builders, non-Japanese speaking fans have seen the series receive more western attention than has been afforded the franchise in a long time. With Dragon Quest VIII 3DS’s incoming 2017 release, the upcoming Dragon Quest XI – that while not yet confirmed for localization, seems increasingly likely – and now this, western fans have a lot to be thankful for going into 2017.
To commemorate their announcement, Square Enix has uploaded an announcement trailer to their YouTube, which we’ve embedded below. It doesn’t tell us much about the game’s changes – it’s more or less just the game’s opening movie with some edits at the end – but it should help players understand the tone that the title will go for when it releases in the west early next year.
From what I’ve gathered, listening to friends that had imported the title, Dragon Quest Heroes II features more of an emphasis on story and has the game feeling more like an RPG while still retaining its Musou elements. Much like the previous title, it’ll contain characters from throughout the series history. It should be interesting to see how the title fairs when it releases in the west next year.
