The release of Injustice 2 is right around the corner and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment have announced more information about the superhero fighting game’s roster. The newest character joining the ranks of champions is Doctor Fate. A new gameplay trailer has been revealed showing off Fate’s powerful magical abilities.

The video shows off Dr. Fate using a combination of offensive and defensive magical abilities to get the upper hand in a fight. His special attack appears to include sending his opponents through a portal to get ganged up on by multiple assailants.

For those not familiar with the more obscure hero, Dr. Fate made his first comic appearance in 1940. Fate gets his powers from a cloak, ankh amulet and golden helmet from the ancient Nabu. The primordial and powerful Nabu initiated him into the Lords of Order, a group of sorcerers who fight against the Order of Chaos across the universe. The character has taken on many different stories and incarnations throughout the years but the version portrayed in Injustice 2 shows his trademark blue and gold costume and stoic personality.

The trailer shows Fate conversing with Superman, hinting at his inclusion in the game’s story mode. Fate is a founding member of the Justice Society of America and is frequently included in the Justice League so his presence makes sense as he fights for order against Superman’s chaotic behavior. Doctor Fate made a cameo appearance in Injustice: Gods Among Us and will be a playable character for the first time in Injustice 2.

Doctor Fate is the latest addition to the line-up of super heroes and villains joining the game. Already new characters such as Black Canary, Blue Beetle, Atrocitus, Cheetah and Swamp Thing have been announced for the game fleshing out a beefy looking roster of fighters. Injustice 2 will be launching for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16, 2017.
