Update: According to Alanah Pearce of Rooster Teeth, who had time to play Red Dead Redemption 2, disabling the HUD does not change the gameplay. NPCs will give you the same directions no matter what way the HUD is toggled.

We are investigating this further.

Original Story: Red Dead Redemption 2 will be even more immersive than we thought.

According to forum user Morgan on gtaforums.com, found out that by playing without the head-up display, you'll get a different experience in Red Dead Redemption 2:

Apparently, the dialogs will also change if you play without the HUD. They tell you to go north and discribe the place where you need to go for example instead of a icon om the minimap. Didn't know that yet...
The proof might seem a little flimsy, but he claimed to have gotten the information from a Belgium and Netherlands gaming magazine called GAMEPLAY. The website shows its October 2018 cover story is on Red Dead Redemption 2. Belgium user nubcaker also chimed in to corroborate this claim. Twitter accounts dedicated to Red Dead Redemption 2 news report this as well.

Games have taken a similar approach before. In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, players were left to dissect clues from their journal rather than rely on the now series-standard map markers. Even Assassin's Creed: Odyssey allows players to choose between either an Exploration Mode or Guided Mode. Exploration mode doesn't point directly to the objective, but rather gives you directions and allows you to customize the HUD to further decide how much information you want. This is not to say it's the same as Red Dead Redemption 2 will be, but it gives more options to the player who don't want to be handheld throughout a game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will soon be upon us - it releases October 26th, 2018. By pre-ordering the game digitally on either console by October 15th, you'll receive 1 million in-game dollars for GTA Online. If you've already pre-ordered the game or will by the end of the promotion date, make sure you've logged into GTA Online by October 15th to be eligible. The cash will deposit some time between October 16th and October 22nd.

If you're looking to immerse yourself in a wild west adventure, Red Dead Redemption 2 can give you that. If you want to learn more about it, take a look at our All We Learned About Red Dead Redemption 2.

Quick Take

I keep seeing more and more new, amazing stuff on this game. I really like the idea of getting rid of the HUD and just playing, giving me as close to an experience as a cowboy as I'll ever get. Still, I do like to just shut my brain off and play a game most of the time, so if I have to think too hard, I'll probably resort back to ol' reliable - the HUD.
