Dead Star 2

Armature Studios has announced via an in-game message on Tuesday that Dead Star, their 10 v 10 space multiplayer game, would be going offline at the beginning of November. The game has already been pulled from Steam and PSN, and those who own the game currently will have nothing but a tutorial available to them after the servers shut down.

In a statement to Kotaku, Armature director Jack Mathews stated that the reason for the shutdown was that "the costs of operating the game now exceed its income...”. He went on to thank the community for keeping the game alive as long as was feasible. All told, the game was publicly available for just seven months.

Writer Samuel Guglielmo reviewed the game for TechRaptor after it launched on PlayStation Plus. He gave the game a 7/10 , stating that it seemed "to have its gameplay down to a science." The main complaint was a lack of content, and that combined with a lack of players after its initial months seems to have done the game in.

When asked about the state of Armature going forward, Matthews shared that "This is purely a financial decision to ensure the best possible future for Armature Studio." Besides Dead Star, Armature also released ReCore earlier this year in conjunction with Comcept, a title we found rather disappointing.

Quick Take

It's going to be one of those weeks.

Dead Star and SMASH+GRAB both retailed for $20, and it seems like that was $20 too much for an audience that now balks at paying any amount of money for a multiplayer focused game that isn't called Overwatch or Rocket League. It's painful to see studios swing for the fences and miss when the stakes are so high, but at least Armature seems to be a going concern after this failure.

What a wonderful digital future we find ourselves in.
