Dead Cells

Dead Cells was released on August 7 last year for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. That was already six platforms in a single release. Now the developer Motion Twin has partnered with mobile games publisher Playdigious to port the acclaimed roguelike metroidvania to iOS devices, iPhones and iPads, by Summer 2019.

According to GamasutraDead Cells passed a million sales in March this year, with the Nintendo Switch release leading the way on console platforms. Our preview and review were both overwhelmingly positive, based on the PC release, which was also very well-received on both Steam and GOG.

The acclaimed roguelike metroidvania action platformer allows you to explore a sprawling, ever-changing castle, assuming you can fight your way past the castle keepers. Its frantic 2D combat is hard to master, with the ever-present threat of permadeath looming over every level. According to some fans, the combination of roguelike and metroidvania even made Dead Cells a genre-defining game, giving birth to the roguevania.

The iOS release will be carefully redesigned for the iPhone and iPad, with a revamped interface. Two game mode will be available, the original and "auto-hit." You'll be able to customize the buttons' positions and sizes, with more touch control options available. There will also be MFi external controller support. There will be no freemium monetization, but instead, a premium one-time purchase for the full Dead Cells experience for $9.99, with no ads or free-to-play mechanics. It will also be available in 11 languages. There's also an Android port in the works planned for a later release.

You can sign up for an email notification for both the iOS and the Android release here.
