Dark Souls 2

Bandai Namco announced that a new version of Dark Souls 2, the latest addition to the 'Souls' saga and one of the most successful RPGs of the past gen, will hit the shelves next year. Scholar of the First Sin will include a number of new features that the current owners of Dark Souls 2 will be able to download via a free update and some features that will only be available for the remastered version. It will also include all the released DLCs (that, of course, will not be included in the patch for current owners). Scholar of the First Sin will come out for PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and PCs. It will include the following additions to the game:

  • Additional NPCs added for an enhanced story experience.
  • Parameter adjustments for improved game balance.
  • Augmented item descriptions.
  • Improved online matchmaking functionality.

Current owners of Dark Souls 2 will have these features added to the game via the 1.10 update. There are also a couple of features that are only included in the current gen and DirectX 11 versions of the game. Specifically, PS4, Xbox One and PC owners that will buy the remastered version, will enjoy updated graphics and an increase of concurrent players in an online session up to 6 players.

That means that, unfortunately, PC gamers drew the short straw once again. Current owners of Dark Souls 2 will be stuck with the DirectX 9 version (that doesn't include the graphics update and the increase of online players) unless they buy the new version. This, of course, is causing outrage in the facebook and twitter accounts of Bandai Namco and Dark Souls.

Those who bought the game for PC, feel that FROM Software and Bandai Namco should include all the new features (minus the DLCs) to the PC update since it seems unreasonable to have 2 versions of the same game released in one year on the same platform. For comparison, it's like if Nintendo would release a better version of Bayonetta 2 for Wii U next year and would retain some of the new features only for the re-released version, despite it being on the same console.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, will be released on April 7, 2015 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC/Steam (DirectX 9/DirectX11)
