Its been a whole decade since Daigo Umehara set the world of competitive gaming and the internet a blaze with his incredible come back against Justin Wong. Tean years later Evo 2014 saw him bounced out in the qualifying rounds. But as it turns out, that tournament was only a warm up. At last month's Asia pro tour finals Daigo worked his Evil Ryu to an absolutely suffocating victory over the hometown native Kun Xian Ho.

The victory  qualified Daigo for the Capcom Cup Finals which are set to be held in San Francisco in just three weeks time. Xian was himself a finalist in last year's finals event which saw him go down to another returning Japanese "God of Fighting" Tatsuya Haitani.

The current tournament standings list France's Olivier Hay aka MD/Luffy as the top ranked player to beat, largely because of the ranking points he won at the aforementioned Evo 2014 tournament. He will be joined by a diverse field of players representing North America, South America, Europe and Asia.

Umehara's name is for many people synonymous with professional fighting game tournaments, and when looking at how these tournaments have grown of the past ten years on has to wonder if Evo 2014 would be handing out a reported one hundred thousand dollars of prize money in 2014 if 'the beast' had never supplied that galvanizing moment back in 2004. Similarly, Daigo's deal with Mad Catz paved the way for the sponsorship trend that now see's his competitors supported by companies like Razer and other financially lucrative professional gaming teams.

The game of choice will of course be Capcom's latest update to the street fighter franchise, Ultra street fighter 4, which was released earlier this year.

And just in case you haven't seen it, heres the fantastic legend-making comeback in question.
