As announced by publisher Thunderful and developer Maschinen-Mensch, roguelike exploration game Curious Expedition 2 will release later this year. It will first enter into Steam Early Access in 2019, with a wide release on PC and consoles coming in 2020. In addition, the first Curious Expedition will be released on consoles in 2019. Curious Expedition 2 promises improved gameplay and graphics, as well as vastly expanding upon the content. There’s no word yet on a release window other than “2019” for Curious Expedition 2, but we may well see more of it soon.
Set just before the rise of the Industrial Era, the Curious Expedition games blend real-world explorers with fantastical locales and discoveries. As you explore across the hexagonal world, you’ll fight wild animals, mythical creatures, and even long-dead dinosaurs. Aside from exploring through the untamed wilderness, you’re also asked to manage resources, loot hidden temples, and otherwise survive in a quest for glory and gold. All of this is wrapped up neatly in a procedurally-generated package, making sure every journey is different.
Curious Expedition 2 looks to expand on the already solid foundation by making several improvements. As mentioned above, Maschinen-Mensch is updating the art style, moving from the pixelated look of the original to a more natural, hand-drawn look in the second. Also new is the addition of “Explorer Clubs,” which are various groups you will earn standing with and unlock “secret benefits.” Worldwide and friend leaderboards are coming too, along with “deeper travel and combat mechanics,” as well as an improved procedural generation algorithm.
Maschinen-Mensch has yet to elaborate on how these changes might further affect the well-loved game. The German indie studio is also reportedly at work on a mystery game set in 1920s Berlin titled The Curious Case. There’s been no further news on development or even a promotional video, so it may be some time before we see a new project out of the developer. Nonetheless, we’ll see Curious Expedition 2 sometime later this year.
