Developer Creative Assembly has announced a new spinoff series based on their Total War franchise.
According to the announcement, the Total War Saga series will focus more on “exciting historical moments in history” versus whole eras, and be completely standalone experiences in the Total War series.
“Total War Saga games will be the same mix of turn-based campaign strategy, real-time battle tactics and hundreds if not thousands of hours of gameplay as a regular Total War game, but focussed down on a distinct moment.” stated Jack Lusted, the creative director of the first Total War Saga game, which has yet to be fully revealed.
Lusted notes that the Saga games will not be revolutionary necessarily, as they won’t introduce brand new eras of history, but they will follow previous games in the series and be related in the same time periods in some form.
Lusted compares their idea for the Total War Saga games to be akin to the Fall of the Samurai expansion for Shogun 2. “It was a standalone spin-off from Total War: Shogun 2, focussed on the pivotal event of the Boshin War,” Stated Lusted. “A concentrated Total War game which puts you right in the middle of a really dynamic moment of history, where the outcome could have gone in a huge number of different directions.”
The Total War Saga game will be one of three projects being worked on at Creative Assembly. The first is Total War: Warhammer II, which is scheduled for a release this September. There is also another Total War title set in a new historical era.
No real details were given about what the Saga Game will focus on, but Lusted does say it is a spiritual follow-up to Total War: Rome II. He states that more information about the game will be released in the coming months.
