As E3 announcements continue on ahead of the press conferences and the actual Expo itself, indie developers are trying to get their news out to everyone paying attention as well. One of them is CreativeForge Games, the developers of Hard West and the forthcoming Phantom Doctrine, as well as their publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment.

Phantom Doctrine is a cold-war espionage take on the new XCom series, much like Hard West was a weird west take on that same series. In Phantom Doctrine, you are in an alternate history thriller as part of a secret organization called The Cabal, fighting against a global conspiracy controlling the world. You have to train in the shadows, investigate, build secret bases, research tech, forge documents and identities and all sorts of traditional espionage things in addition to the tactical missions that come up which provide you options in going loud with heavy weapons or silently for stealthy assaults. Well here, rather than me just telling you about it, see for yourself the new story and gameplay E3 2018 trailer for Phantom Doctrine.

Much better - you can even see it from the thumbnail with how the loadout is set up it draws a heavy inspiration from the new XCom series of games.

Beyond that, for E3 2018, the teams announced that Phantom Doctrine will be releasing not just on PC, but also PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will be releasing sometime in Summer 2018, and perhaps next week we might hear more about that.

 Quick Take

Hard West was a good and interesting take on the new XCom formula and Phantom Doctrine looks to take twisting it even further with some really interesting ideas. I admit, I love strategic games like that and I have a soft spot for spy fiction and the like so for me this is right up my alley. That being said, everything here shows a game that will show a team's skill in a genre and introducing new elements to it.

The folks here at CreativeForge are part of a generation exploring an area of gaming that was basically void for over a decade. Now we have games like the new XCom (which might see a new expansion for its sequel), Xenonauts and its upcoming sequel as throwbacks, Pheonix Point, and more all coming out.
