It's time for another Steam Spring Cleaning event. This one runs until May 28th at 10 am PT (that's 1 pm ET). Valve is encouraging you to take a look at your backlog and clear out some of the games you never got around to. Doing so can earn you trophies which will, in turn, unlock badges for your profile.

The Spring Cleaning event is organized into daily tasks and projects. There are three daily tasks to complete each day between now and May 28th. Speed Clean wants you to play the games Valve is offering for free during this period. Spin Cycle picks random games from your library for you to play. Clear the Backlog asks you to try games you've never played in your library. Completing these tasks daily will earn you rewards.

Projects are as follows: there's Nostalgia, which asks you to play a game with less than 2 hours on the clock that you haven't played in a while. There's also Can't Wait, for which you must play a game purchased within the last six months. Trusted Friend wants you to play games recommended by a friend. Blast from the Past is a nostalgic task asking you to play the first game you ever added to your Steam account. If you completed this task in last year's Spring Cleaning event, play the second game on your account. Finally, there's Tag Contributor. For that one, you'll need to play a game with a tag you've applied to another Steam game.

If, like many of us, your Steam library is simply a storage shelf for unwanted games, there are also plenty of free offerings to try during the Steam Spring Cleaning event. Here's a list of the free games Valve is offering until May 28th (you won't get to keep them, though):

  • Assetto Corsa
  • Black Desert Online
  • Dead by Daylight
  • Don't Starve Together
  • Endless Space 2
  • Grim Dawn
  • Left 4 Dead 2
Playing these games also earns you badges, so it's win-win. Earning Badges not only gives you more things to display on your profile but contributes to raising your Steam Account Level which governs things like how many friends you can have. The Steam Spring Cleaning event runs until May 28th. Remember, this isn't a fully-fledged sale; you'll have to wait until summer for that.
