Civilization VI Kongo

Firaxis games have released yet another video highlighting some of the mechanics and abilities of one of the civilizations coming to Sid Meier's Civilization VI. In this newest spotlight, we get to know the Kongolese civilization led by Mvemba a Nzinga.

Mvemba a Nzinga (also known Afonso 1 of Kongo after he converted to Christianity) led the Kingdom of Kongo in the 16th century and served as the fifth king of the Kongo dynasty. He is most known for establishing the Roman Catholic Church in Kongo as well as providing education to Kongo's upper class and expanded the wealth of Kongo significantly by trading with Portugal.

The Kongolese ability is called Nkisi (a term for spirits embodying specific objects like artworks) and gives Kongo more food, production and gold from each relic, artifact and Great Works of Sculpture and adds to their culture and tourism output. This ability also allows Kongo to generate Great Merchants and Great Artists faster than other civilizations.

Kongo's elite unit is the Ngao Mbeba and replaces the swordsman. These units can see through forests and jungles and has no movement penalty when moving through either. This unit has extra defense against ranged attacks and you don't need iron to train them.

Kongo's unique tile improvement is the M'banza and replaces the neighborhood and can be built in the early stages of the game. This tile improvement gives you extra gold and food in addition to providing your citizens with housing.

Kongo's unique leader ability is religious Convert. This ability means that you won't be able to construct holy sites as Kongo, preventing them from starting a religion, but you are able to use the founder belief of the majority religion in your empire. Kongolese players get a free Apostle every time they build a Theatre District or the M'banza tile improvement. The free Apostle follows the majority religion of the city the unit spawns in.

Kongo is a very flexible civilization that can use religion to their advantage and can thrive in places where other civilizations can't. Kongo is also able to use their unique abilities to achieve all possible victories by expanding quickly and building on terrain that would slow down other civilizations, like rainforests and jungles.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
