The Waylanders, an RPG in development by Gato Studio, just got a big boost with the help of two industry veterans.

It was announced over Gamescom this week that Chris Avellone, the writer and director of many RPGs, most notably Planescape Torment among many other credits, and Inon Zur, the Emmy-Award winning composer known for games such as Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Dragons Dogma, will be joining the team as the game nears completion.

Avellone has already done extensive work on The Waylanders for the past 18 months, while working on the upcoming AAA titles such as Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. The game is described as an "exciting fantasy RPG inspired by classics such as Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate," with a focus on a party-based, tactical experience that involves time travel between two distinct eras, the Celtic and Medieval age.

The story of the game focuses heavily on Celtic mythology and a time period that is largely overlooked by other games. The game sports six basic and thirty advanced classes to choose from, along with five playable races and of course, a diverse set of companions to follow you. Gato studio also promises that choices made in the game will matter, this time in regards to the two time periods; a choice in one time period can have dire consequences in the other, with players seeing and feeling the impact of their decisions like never before.

The games lead writer is not Avellone, but Emily Grace Buck, best known for her work as a writer and narrative designer for Telltale Games'  Guardians of the Galaxy, Batman: A Telltale Game Series and Batman: The Enemy Within. Both Buck and Avellone were also joined by former BioWare creative director Mike Laidlaw, who served as a consultant on the script.

The Waylanders will be the first project by Gato Studio, which also had a successful Kickstarter campaign to finish funding the project in November of 2018. Currently, the game is scheduled for an unspecified 2020 release date.
