Indie Darling Celeste, the pixel-styled platforming game by developers Matt Thorson and Noel Berry, has sold over 500,000 copies since January.

Thorson, the game's director and designer expressed gratitude for the milestone on Twitter, thanking everyone who played their title in the process.

Thorson went on to announce that the game will be getting further updates in 2019, specifically a block of 'farewell levels'. According to Thorson, these farewell levels will be "very hard," a fitting send-off due to the games challenging difficulty.

The game was originally conceived by Thorson and Berry during a four-day game jam, with their prototype of the game, now known as Celeste Classic, playable on the Pico-8, a virtual console that uses html5 to play games. Celeste Classic contained 30 challenging levels, while the final version released on all current consoles and PC tout over 700+ screens, including "B-side Chapters" filled with incredibly difficult platforming challenges for players to go through.

Officially released on January 25th of this year, the game is a narrative-driven platforming game where players play as the girl Madeline, who must fight her inner demons and other insecurities as she climbs Celeste mountain.

The game received further mainstream attention thanks to their nominations for The Game Awards this year, being nominated for four categories, including Game of the Year, the only indie game on the list. Celeste would go on and win best Independent Game and the Games for Impact Award, beating out titles such as Return of the Obra Dinn, Dead Cells and Life is Strange 2: Episode 1.

Celeste is currently available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and on the PC via Steam, where it is currently on sale.
