CD Projekt Registers Gwent Game Trademark

When I bought The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt I went in blind. Knowing nothing of the franchise apart from a handful of hours I've put into the previous 2 games before giving up, I picked it up after a few friends of mine recommended it to me. I took the bait, and before I knew it I was set on a path where I not only played the game, but made a dent in the books it's based on. While I adored my time with the game's main campaign and wonderful DLC (working my way through Blood and Wine as we speak), my total playtime has been extended dramatically by Gwent, the little card game that turned into more than just a fun distraction in between slaying monsters and working for peasants who hated my guts.

And I was far from the only one! After The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out the internet was full of discussions about Gwent, and it seems CD Projekt are on the cusp of giving fans of the in-universe CCG the standalone game they've been asking for!

This news comes from Nerdleaks, which have observed that CD Projekt has filed a trademark for a game based around Gwent, which as been given the title Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. According to the article, the trademark has been filed to the European Union Intellectual Property Office under video games and software on June 6. What's more, they've also submitted a design for the logo, which adorns the top of this very page!

Whether CD Projekt are planning to officially unveil Gwent: The Witcher Card Game at the E3 at the end of the week is anyone's guess at this point, but the timing of the registration would make that a logical next step as is the fact they are planning to showcase a new game at E3 that is not Cyberpunk 2077 from what they've said.

Quick Take

I can't be happier about this, myself. I've spent entire sessions not bothering with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's main campaign and sat in taverns playing Gwent for days on end instead.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
