Max and Maya

Max and Maya, jokingly billed by its creators as a "realistic alpha-cat simulator", is coming to Steam in spring 2019.

The project, which is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, describes itself as a "sarcastic action-RPG with pet simulator elements". The game's Kickstarter page is pretty packed with boasts and promises, including "diverse gameplay", "cat-fu", an "attractive storyline" and many other features. Right now, though, actual details regarding concrete storylines or the exact nature of how the game will work are rather thin on the ground.

Here's what we do know. Max and Maya is the first project by upstart indie developers OMG Studios, a team of self-professed cat lovers (the Kickstarter page describes the game as being "by cat lovers, for cat lovers"). Supposedly, the finished product will have a focus on "quests, skill boosting, fights, and storyline", although there will still be "certain needs that influence [your cat's] parameters and have to be filled".

The trailer for Max and Maya looks decidedly Goat Simulator-ish, with a focus on quirky, offbeat humor and somewhat ropey physics. There are also screenshots which depict a sort of RTS-style settlement-building aspect to the game, with a surprisingly comprehensive interface. The Kickstarter page promises a "big game world", although whether this means the game will be open-world or take place across multiple large levels is unclear. The exact nature of the storyline is also somewhat shrouded in mystery, although a press release from OMG Studios promises a world in which "people turned into zombies, and the world now belongs to cats and dogs, fighting for fleas". The little parasites will take the form of the game's currency, apparently. Finally, there's "meow-magic", which will use players' voices to cast spells and "crash death and destruction on [their] enemies' heads".

Seems like a pretty idiosyncratic project, but as a cat lover, I'm intrigued. OMG Studios is asking for $75,000 to cover base costs for Max and Maya, with stretch goals including a bigger world and more polished combat if this amount is exceeded. It's not clear whether OMG Studios intends to release the game regardless of whether its Kickstarter goal is met, but they seem to be aiming for a Spring 2019 release.

Excited to check out Max and Maya when it's released? Would any other games be improved by being able to play as a cat? Let us know in the comments below!
