According to information released at Netflix’s recent programming event, Konami’s Castlevania series will be the latest video game franchise to make the leap to the small screen. Announced as being part of Netflix’s 2017 lineup, they have so far been very sparse with the details, simply stating that Part 1 of Season 1 will be released in 2017. The official synopsis reads “Inspired by the classic video game series, 'Castlevania' is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.”

Producer Adi Shankar’s Facebook page was able to shed a little more light on the situation. According to him, “Season 2” will be coming out in 2018 and Kevin Kolde will be a producer on the project. Kolde is known primarily for his work as a producer on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and his involvement points to the series being an animated adaptation. Additionally, Shankar stated that the adaptation is being written by legendary comic author Warren Ellis, known for his series Transmetropolitan, The Authority and Planetary as well as his webcomic FreakAngels. With over two decades of experience in the comic industry behind him, including work at both DC and Marvel, Ellis’ involvement sets a high expectation for quality. Ellis has also previously been linked to an animated adaptation of Castlevania, in 2006.

Shankar previously stated back in 2015 that he was working on a Castlevania adaptation with Fred Seibert of Frederator Studios, however, Seibert’s continued involvement in the project is unconfirmed at this time.

Castlevania is one of Konami’s longest running and most successful video game franchises. Debuting in 1986, the series follows members of the vampire-hunting Belmont clan as they battle Dracula through the ages. The most recent iteration of the series was a reboot showing the origins of Dracula. Named Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, that game was released in 2010 and followed by a sequel in 2015.
