A new game from Crosse Studios, the makers of College Lacrosse 2010-2012, NLL 10 and 11, as well as five lacrosse mobile games, have teamed up with Big Ant Studios, makers of games such as the Rugby League Live series and Jet Pack Joyride, to develop Casey Powell Lacrosse 16. This will be the first full lacrosse game for consoles since College Lacrosse 2012. After a successful Indiegogo campaign that raised $165,132, Crosse Studios and Big Ant Studios were able to get a new engine for the game which has allowed for better graphics as well as truer to life gameplay.

In an interview with Inside Lacrosse Crosse Studios founder Carlo Sunseri said "Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 is all about the lacrosse fans... We've pushed the lacrosse visuals, gameplay depth, and features to a jaw-dropping level. At the end of the day, without the support of the lacrosse community, this game would have never been a reality."

The lacrosse community has had a very real hand in helping this game become a reality and the fact that Sunseri is a lacrosse player/fan/coach means that the game has someone who understands lacrosse there to make sure things are as accurate as can be. Big Ant Studios CEO Ross Symons has said “Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 brings together the Lacrosse expertise of Crosse and the sports game pedigree of Big Ant into what we believe is the best Lacrosse video game of all time.” It's good to see the people behind the development of Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 believe in and are as passionate about it as the fans.

Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 vs. Blast Lacrosse
As amazing as Blast Lacrosse was it's nice to see how things have advanced.

The game gets its title from Casey Powell one of the greatest lacrosse players alive today with a wealth of awards and championships under his belt. Powell explains why he wanted to get involved in the game:

"Over the past several years I’ve been admiring what Carlo and Big Ant have been developing.  As the opportunity presented itself, it was a no brainer for me to join my long time friend and successful entrepreneur, Scott Hochstadt, and Carlo Sunseri to help bring this project to the next level...CP16 is set to have a major impact on the game of lacrosse as it combines entertainment, education, and exposure, and certainly will push the needle for our sport. Our team (Carlo, Scott, and Big Ant) is all about growing the game and giving lacrosse players an awesome product.  I’m both proud and honored to be the face of Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 and look forward to its monumental release in the coming weeks."

The game will have a lot of the features you'd expect from a sports game such as quick play, a multi year dynasty mode, ranked and unranked online multiplayer, mini games, player and team creation, and skill leveling for your players. The character and team customization options are pretty deep from height, weight, skin, physique, facial features and hairstyles, and then to helmets, jerseys, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, stick shafts, stick heads, war paint, socks and shoes for your team. The game looks to provide a representation of the game of lacrosse from the face-offs, defense, offense, goalie play, ground balls, dodging, and checking that is as accurate as it's ever been in a video game.

Being the first big lacrosse game release for this console generation this game has a lot to prove, but the team behind it definitely seems to have the passion to make it happen. Lacrosse fans would love this game to succeed and get some attention from AAA publishers like EA or Activision in the hopes that the next game might have the support to create an even better experience. Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 releases March 9 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Steam for $50

Quick Take

As a lacrosse player, I am very excited about this game. I played most of the older console games for the Xbox 360, and while fun definitely showed they were made with limited resources. Seeing this latest game and how much better it looks, and how much more accurately the gameplay looks to real lacrosse has my hopes pretty high that this will not only be a fun game, but a genuinely solid game gameplay wise. My hope for this game is that it does well enough in sales that EA or Activision takes notice and decides to pick it up or fund the next game in some way.
